Built to Expire – Hornsby REIMAGINE Art Prize 2026 Finalist: Fix, Mend, Repair, Repeat

As a young person my father learnt the trade of toolmaker and later worked as an engineer. He virtually can repair anything (or at least that is what it feels like to us all) – UNLESS, of course, something was deliberately built to expire, that cannot be repaired, fixed, mended. I am not naive to think he, or we, could fix the complex electronic gadgets of today’s everyday life, and I do not want to champion regressive living. However, in this work a few of my father’s simple, beautiful wood and metal tools are a stand-in for the “Right to Repair” movement that fights to give us consumers the power back to repair items, prolong their lifespan and reduce waste. The painting is made using acrylics on repurposed timber.
